The Thai-Vietnamese Relationship
On September 19 th , 2007, the Royal Thai Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam, in cooperation with the Vietnamese Section of the Department of Eastern Languages in the Faculty of Arts and the Asian Studies Institute, organized a forum on “The Thai-Vietnamese Relationship: Background, Problems and the Future” and introduced a book entitled, The Background in the Development of the Relationship Between Thailand and Vietnam (1976 -2000) , written by Dr. Hoang Khac Nam of Hanoi National University. The forum was coordinated by Dr. Thera Nuchpiam, an advisor to the Asian Studies Institute. The event took place in Room 707 in the BRK Building. |

Translation Theories and Translation Research
On September 4 th , 2007, the Chalerm Prakiet Translation and Interpretation Center of the Faculty of Arts, invited Professor Theo Hermans from University College London to lead a training session and seminar on topics related to translation theories and translation research. His presentation on “The Echo of Translation: Reported Speech, Value Conflicts and Communities” and semi-workshop on “Translation Research” were able to generate much discussion among the audience. |

The Vietnam War: the Persisting Memory
On August 30 th , 2007, the Center for Literary Studies in the Vietnamese Section of the Department of Eastern Languages, the Thai-Vietnamese Cultural Club and the Kop Fai Publishing Project organized a forum on “The Vietnam War: the Persisting Memory”. The forum was led by Associate Professor Lae Dilokwittayaratna, Chairman of the Thai-Vietnamese Cultural Club, Dr. Thera Nuchpiam, advisor to the Asian Studies Institute, Dr. Jaturee Tingsabhadhiya, Head of the Department of Comparative Literature and Captain William S Whorton, a retired teacher and a Vietnam War veteran. A book, The Memoir of Dang Thuy Tram translated by Dr. Monthira Ratho was launched on this occasion. |

On June 14 th , 2007, the International Affairs Section and the Cultural Office of the U.S. Embassy in Thailand hosted a special talk on “Meet Ladda Tammy Duckworth: A Thai-American Leads in the U.S.” by Ladda Tammy Duckworth, a Thai American who fought in the Iraq War and ran for the U.S. Congress. |

Thomas Mann: the Narrator
On December 7 th , 2006, the Doctoral Program in Literature and Comparative Literature, in cooperation with Thailand's Language and Letters Association under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King and Chulalongkorn University's Publishing House, organized an academic seminar on “Thomas Mann: the Narrator”. Prof. Dr. Heinrich Detering from Tubingen University gave the key-note speech on “Stigma and the Arts of Writing: the Genealogy of Thomas Mann's Narratives”. This was followed by a discussion on the translation of Narratives by Thomas Mann. |

On July 19 and 26, 2006, the French Section organized special lectures on Greek and Roman literature and its influence on French literature for undergraduates and graduate students majoring in French. The lectures were given by M. Christian Pellaumail, a former lecturer in Classical French Literature and a former educational supervisor for the teaching of French literature in the French Ministry of Education. M. Pellaunail once served as Cultural Charge d’ Affaires at the French Embassy in Bangkok . |
