From Cuba to Germany : Courtesy visits by Ambassadors

On December 4, 2008 H.E. Mr. Lazaro Herrera, the Cuban Ambassador, paid a courtesy visit to Assistant Professor Dr. Prapod Assavavirulhakarn, our Dean , on the occasion of the former's taking up the position of the Ambassador to Thailand. Associate Professor Surapeepan Chatraporn (Associate Dean for International Affairs), and Ajarn Chantra Pramulsub (Head of the Spanish Section) joined in the discussion on the possibility of academic and cultural cooperation between the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba and the Faculty of Arts. As part of the Ambassador's visit, the Dean took him on a walking tour of the Maha Chulalongkorn and Maha Vajiravudh Buildings .

 

On December 15, 2008 H.E Dr. Hanns Schumacher, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany—accompanied by Ms. Elke Tiedt, the Cultural Attaché—visited the Faculty to present German books to the Dean as rewards for outstanding German majors and minors. Associate Professor Surapeepan Chatraporn, Professor Tanomnuan O-Chareon and Associate Professor Dr. Wanna Saenga-ramroeng joined the Dean in giving the diplomats a warm welcome. The German representatives and Thai scholars went on to discuss ways and means to further strengthen cordial relationships and expand the academic and cultural collaboration.

 

Chula and Korea : Contract Signing

In late November, Assistant Professor Dr. Prapod Assavairulhakarn, our Dean, signed a contract with the Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies, Ewha University ( Korea ). According to the contract, Ewha University's Department of Korean Studies, in an ‘Internship Program,' will send two M.A. or Ph.D. candidates to teach Korean language to students taking Korean courses, as well as to carry out assignments at the Korean Section, Department of Eastern Languages, Faculty of Arts, for a period of eight weeks during the months of June to August. The first phase of the agreement covers a period of four years.

Ewha Womans University was established in 1886 (the seemingly odd spelling was correct at the time of its founding and is kept for historical reasons), and currently has a student population of approximately 20,000. Ewha Womans University is among the world's most prestigious women's universities and enjoys a reputation of being one of Korea 's best-known institutions of higher learning.

 

In connection with this new academic relationship, Ajarn Supaporn Boonrung was invited by Ewha Womans University—and funded by the Korean Ministry of Education—to attend, in her capacity as the coordinator for the Korean Language Teaching Project, a conference at Ewha Woman's University from January 14 to 16, 2009 in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

 

Hall of Fame

The Republic of Italy will confer the esteemed titular honour of “Knight of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity” to Asst. Prof. Neungruthai Lohapol, Head of the Department of Western Languages, in a ceremony to be held at the Italian Embassy on November 24, 2008.

A Visit by an Officer from SEASREP
On July 18, 2007, Ms. Imelda Adande, an officer of the Southeast Asian Reginal Exchange Program whose head office is in Manila, the Philippines, met Dr. Phachee Yuvajita to introduce the activities of the programme and to encourage cooperation between the Faculty of Arts and SEASREP.
 

The President of Peking University’s Visit
Mr. Xu Shihong, the President of Peking University, and a team of 24 Chinese academicians visited Chulalongkorn University on January 17, 2007 . Prior to a lunch with the President and administrators of Chulalongkorn University, he paid a visit to the Faculty of Arts where he was greeted by the Associate Dean for International Affairs, the Head of the Eastern Languages Department and the Director of the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University, the Head of the Thai Department, the Head of the Chinese Section and students majoring in Chinese.  
       


Cooperation between Chulalongkorn University and Toyota Motors(Thailand)Company Limited
On November 7, 2006 , Prof. Khunying Suchada Kirananda, President of Chulalongkorn University and Mr. Ryoichi Sasaki, President of Toyota Motors(Thailand)Company Limited signed an agreement to promote the study of Japanese in the Japanese Section of the Department of Eastern Languages, Chulalongkorn University . According to the agreement, Toyota Motors (Thailand) Company Limited will provide financial support for the development of Japanese language teaching in the Japanese Section for five years, from 2006 to 2010, to the amount of 3,950, 000 Baht per year or 19,750,000 Baht in total.

       
       


A Visit to the German Section by a Representative of the DAAD
Prof. Dr. Gerlach from the DAAD visited the German Section of the Department of Western Languages on November 9, 2006 . He was welcome by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wanna Saengaramruang, Head of the German Section, faculty members and students majoring in German. The DAAD is a German organization that has supported the German Section for fifty years since its launch. Four Thai teachers in the Faculty of Arts were recipients of DAAD scholarships to pursue a doctoral degree in Germany . The organization has also supported teachers as well as graduate and undergraduate students in their training or for educational tours in Germany .

       


A Visit by the Representative of Kyoto Notre Dame University
On November 6, 2006, Assoc. Prof. Pachee Yuvajita, Associate Dean for International Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Montha Pimthong, Head of the Japanese Section and Assoc. Prof. Saowalak Suriyawongphaisarn, Chair of the M.A. Program in the Japanese Section welcomed Ms. Mikiko Sakakida, International Manager of the Center for International Programs in Kyoto Notre Dame University . They discussed the possibility of establishing a student exchange program between the Faculty of Arts and Kyoto Notre Dame University .



A Visit by Latin American Academicians
On September 19, 2006 , a group of nine lecturers from Latin American universities visited Assoc. Prof Pachee Yuvajita, Associate Dean for International Affairs, Assoc. Prof Sathaporn Tippayasak, Director of the Center for Latin Studies and faculty members from the Spanish Section. The discussion involved how to create cooperation between Thai and Latin America universities as well as ways of promoting Thailand as a center of academic networks between Asian and Latin American academicians.



The Gabriela Mistral Exhibition
    On August 30, 2006, the Latin Studies Centre at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University and the Embassy of the Republic of Chile in Bangkok organized an exhibition in commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of the presentation of the Nobel Prize for Literature to Gabriela Mistral, a female Chilean poet. The exhibition was opened by the Chilean Chargé d’Affaires and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and it was attended by a number of staff members from the Embassy of Chile and the Faculty of Arts. The opening ceremony was marked by speeches from the Chargé d’Affaires and the Dean and included readings of Gabriela’s poems in Spanish and in Thai translations.
       


The Thirtieth Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Thailand and Vietnam
   The Vietnamese Section of the Department of Eastern Languages, in collaboration with the Mekong Research Unit, the Asian Studies Centre of Chulalongkorn University and the Language and Cultural Research Centre for Rural Development at Mahidol University, organized a seminar to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Vietnam. The seminar was opened by the Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The event, which took place on August 5, 2006, was attended by academics from the Faculty of Arts as well as members of the Thai-Vietnamese Friendship Association of Bangkok.
       


The Historical and Cultural Relationship between Portugal and Siam
   The Embassy of Portugal in Bangkok, the Portuguese Cultural Center, ICA-IPOR and the International Affairs Section of the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, organized a seminar and an exhibition on “The Historical and Cultural Relationship between Portugal and Siam” to launch the 500 th anniversary of ties between Portugal and Siam, which will occur in 2009 and to celebrate the 2006 sixtieth anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne. Events were held from June 26 to 27, 2006 in Maha Chulalongkorn Building. The opening ceremony was presided over by H.E Ambassador Joao de Lima Pimentel, the Portuguese Ambassador to Thailand and Prof. Dr. Theraphan Laungthongkum, Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The seminar was a venue for Thai and Portuguese scholars to present their papers and exchange their views.
       
       


Financial Support from Toyota to the Japanese Section
   Khun Ngamporn Patanapiroonhakit, Director of the Organization Planning Office of Toyota Motors (Thailand) Co. Ltd., presented a check of 3, 950, 000 Baht to the Japanese Section of the Faculty of Arts in the Dean’s Office, Maha Vajiravudh Building, on July 24, 2006. This sum is intended for the support of organizing the activities of the Japanese Section
   


Visits to Indonesian Universities
   From May 28 to June 4, 2006, Prof. Dr. Piyanart Bunnag, the Director of the Center for Historical Relations between Thailand and Southeast Asian Countries, Dr. Jurispong Chularatana, the Deputy-Director and Dr. Dinar Boontharm, a committee member of the Center, traveled to Indonesia to seek academic cooperation with the History Departments of three universities—Airlangga University in Surabaya, Sebelas Maret in Surakarta and Udayana in Denpasar, Bali. The history professors from Chulalongkorn University were successful in establishing academic ties with Airlangga and Udayana Universities. They could not reach Sebelas Maret University due to its location in Central Java, which had suffered from major earthquakes and was thus not accessible.


Gifts from the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangkok
   To celebrate the seven-five years of the relationship between Thailand and Switzerland, on May 22, 2006, H.E. Ambassador Rudolphe Iamhoof of Switzerland presented books in four languages –English, French, German and Italian, to Prof. Dr. Theraphan Luangthongkum, Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The presentation took place in Room 104 of Maha Vajiravudh Building and was followed by H E the Ambassador’s brief tour of the Faculty of Arts where he met administrators and teachers from the Western Languages Department.
 


Gifts from the Embassy of Mexico in Bangkok
   On July 6, 2006, Mr. José Francisco Zamora Carmona, Third Secretary of the Mexican Embassy in Bangkok, presented books in Spanish to Prof. Dr. Theraphan Luangthongkum, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, in the Dean’s Office. Staff members from the Spanish Section were joint hosts to the guest of honor.


Visit by Representatives of Toyo Eiwa University, Japan
   Prof. Yuko Takeshita from Toyo Eiwa University in Japan visited Prof. Dr. Theraphan Luanthongkum, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, on May 17, 2006 in the Dean’s Office, Maha Vajiravudh Building to discuss the possibility of establishing a students’ exchange program between the two universities.
   


Workshop by an American Specialist in American Studies
   From January 11 -13, 2006, in cooperation with the American Embassy in Bangkok, the International Affairs Section of the Faculty of Arts invited Prof. Paul Levine, a visiting professor at Shanghai Normal University, to conduct a workshop and discuss the possibility of establishing an American Studies Program in the Faculty of arts and the Graduate School.
       
 


Visit by the Austrian Ambassador
   H.E. Ambassador Arno Riedel of the Republic of Austria visited Prof. Dr. Theraphan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts. They were joined by Prof. Umpha Otrakul, a special lecturer in German and Asst. Prof. Chusri Wong-ukote, Head of the German Section.



Chargé d' Affaires of the Embassy of Spain’s Visit to Faculty of Arts
   On September 26, 2005, Mr. Francisco do Asis Benitez Salas, Chargé d' Affaires of the Embassy of Spain visited Professor Dr.Theraphan Luangthongkum at the Faculty of Arts to discuss further possibilities in strengthening the relations between the University and the Spanish Embassy.


   


A Celebration of the Tenth Anniversary of the Cooperation between the Thai Studies Program and the University of Innsbruck

   On February 3 and 4, 2005, the Center for Thai Studies celebrated the tenth anniversary of its cooperation with the University of Innsbruck. The celebration was organized in two parts, academic and social activities. The highlight was a conference on “Internationalization in Higher Education,” involving distinguished speakers such as, Prof.Dr.Erich Thoni, who is the ASEA-UNINET Coordinator, Prof.Dr. Gilg Seeber from the University of Innsbruck, the Austrian ambassadors to Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam and President of the European Union in Thailand. The academic activities culminated in social and cultural gatherings-- a banquet hosted by the Faculty of Arts and a river cruise sponsored by the Austrian Embassy. The events were accompanied by performances from students of the two universities.
       


The President of the European Union’s Meeting with the Dean of the Faculty of Arts

    H.E. Friedrich Hamburger, President of the European Union in Thailand, visited Prof.Dr.Theraphan Luangthongkum, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, to discuss possible areas of cooperation between the two organizations.



Teachers and Students of the National University of Hanoi at the Faculty of Arts

The Vietnamese Section of the Department of Eastern Languages, recently organized a program to promote an exchange of knowledge between Thai and Vietnamese faculty members. On February 24, 2005, teachers and students from the National University of Hanoi paid a visit to the Faculty of Arts and were introduced to the Vietnamese Section and the teaching of Vietnamese in Thailand. They also discussed the experience of teaching Thai in Vietnam. Dr.Monthira Ratho, a Thai lecturer in the Vietnamese Section, acted as coordinator of the program.
 


A Visit by Prof. Barbara B. Moran
On February 15, 2005, Prof. Barbara B. Moran from the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill visited the Department of Library Science to discuss academic cooperation between the two institutions.
 


A Special Lecture by the German Ambassador
On December 1, 2004, Prof.Dr. Theraphan Luangthongkum, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Prof.Dr. Pornsan Watanangkura, the Coordinator of the European Studies Program, welcomed H.E. Andreas von Stechow, the German Ambassador to Thailand, who gave a special lecture on “Germany After World War II” to students in “Europe After World War II” class in Room 401, BRK Building.
 


The French Section Welcome the French Cultural Attaché

Prof.Dr. Theraphan Luangthongkum, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Assoc.Prof. Ratanaporn Tharanurak, the head of the French Section welcomed M. Colombier, the French Cultural Attaché from the French Embassy in Bangkok, to a meeting on November 18, 2004. Members of the French Section also joined this meeting.
   


Delegates from the National Taiwan Normal University
On November 1, 2004, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and members of the Chinese Section welcomed delegates from the National Taiwan Normal University in Room 708, BRK Building to discuss cooperation between the two universities in the management of the M.A program in Chinese as an international language.
